These reports of collisions, near misses and hazards, which are not typically collected by local authorities, can tell us a lot about where serious accidents are waiting to happen.
Clusters – places where infrastructure, road surface or other factors combine to create consistently dangerous situations – emerged.

My front wheel got stuck in the Luastrack and I fell.
Researchers at University College Dublin analysed the written reports submitted to the Collision Tracker project. Among their findings was the persistent danger of Luas tracks, which trap the wheels of bicycles and pose a slip hazard when wet.
In another finding, they highlighted a critical pattern: vehicles turning left into the path of cyclists. This trend was reported on by Dublin Inquirer and later, was the subject of an Road Safety Authority awareness campaign.

Consistently, incidents occur where vulnerable road users cross paths with heavier vehicles, such as at junctions, roundabouts and on busy roads.
As vehicles get bigger, outcomes for cyclists and pedestrians tend to be more serious.

So, what makes for safe cycling in cities?
Level of risk is influenced by factors including surface quality, presence of other road users, speed and weather.
Behaviours and attitudes of drivers and cyclists alike contribute to the safety of walking and cycling in the city. But these can be slow to change.
Infrastructure, specifically that which separates heavy motorised vehicles from vulnerable road users is key to reducing the rate and severity of collisions.
However, the data to support continued investment in this infrastruture remains underreported.
